Senate Concurrent Resolution 625

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG DEPENDENCE OF THE CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI AREA, INC., ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 50TH-YEAR OF SERVICE IN MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the Central Mississippi Area, Inc., is a nonprofit agency established in 1949 as the Jackson Committee for Education on Alcoholism to provide information, referrals and programs on alcoholism and other addictions, and this year is celebrating 50 years of service to the residents of the Hinds, Rankin and Madison County areas;

WHEREAS, in the early years all services were provided by volunteers of the committee until the first executive director was hired in the 1950's as the community's need for services grew; and

WHEREAS, during the last 50 years the Council has grown in size and in the number of services provided through funding from United Way, private donations and grants; and

WHEREAS, the Council offers the following programs and services: information clearinghouse regarding all aspects of alcoholism, tobacco and other drug addictions; private consultations and emotional support; speakers' programs for schools, churches, civic organizations, businesses and parent groups; parenting programs for raising alcohol- and drug-free children; and children's programs focusing on young children of alcohol-, drug-addicted or dysfunctional parents; and

WHEREAS, in celebration of its 50th Anniversary, the Council is featuring speaker J. Keith Miller, nationally recognized author and consultant on alcoholism addiction and other dependencies, on Tuesday, March 16, 1999; and

WHEREAS, the month of April has been designated by the Legislature as Alcohol Awareness Month in Mississippi and it is with great pride that we recognize the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the Central Mississippi Area, Inc., for its outstanding contributions in promoting public awareness of alcoholism and related problems:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of the Central Mississippi Area, Inc., upon the occasion of its 50th-year of service to the residents of central Mississippi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be presented to the Executive Director of the Council and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
